Giancarlo Stanton plays in the outfield for the Miami Marlins. The American-born MLB standout was formally known as “Mike” Stanton, although he has made it known publicly that he prefers the name Giancarlo to honor his Puerto Rican heritage.
On June 6, 2010, Stanton was called up to the Major Leagues, making his debut two days later. At 20 years, 212 days, he became the third youngest player in Marlins history. Stanton went 3-for-5 with two infield singles and scored twice in his inaugural game with the Marlins.
Stanton’s best season to date came in 2012 when he finished the year with career highs in home runs (37; 2nd in the National League, behind only Ryan Braun), batting average (.290), on-base percentage (.361), and slugging percentage (.608) which led all of MLB. He was third in the National League in on base plus slugging percentage (.969; behind Braun and Joey Votto). During an injury shortened 2013 season, Stanton didn’t stop putting up milestone numbers. The Marlins outfielder topped the 100 career home run mark, putting him in the top ten in fastest players to his 100 career home runs.
